Chernarusian Special Forces in Lingor: Counter Narco Mission 5

A Chernarusian special forces unit (Naval Spetznaz) is tasked with a drug interdiction mission in Lingor.  The following is the mission summary:

Major, our intelligence operatives tell us that narcos are planning to ship a large amount of heroin to Chernarus aboard two aircraft at an airfield near Fernando.

You already have a CNF sniper posited at the north end of the runway with orders to eliminate the four sentries on your signal, and to provide cover for your mission.  A small detachment of narco shooters are in the abandoned base at the south end of the runway, and will likely attempt to find and eliminate your team.  Additionally, a truck road patrol moves through the area at regular intervals.  Three more narco shooter teams are nearby and likely to intervene when you destroy the aircraft.

Your mission is to wipe out all enemy opposition, destroy all enemy aircraft, and exfiltrate back to the extraction zone

All the best, major.
The units will insert from sea via Zodiac boat.

Recon in Force at Bajerke Dumez

Chernarusian forces consisting of a T-80BV tank company, a motorized rifle company (BTR) will cross the river at Reya Gunde Bihar unopposed and attempt to probe into Bajerke Dumez, about four kilometers to the northwest.  the time is 0615 hrs, November 25th, 2013.

Arma 2 doesn't have very good engineering means save for mines, and most of the bridges will not take armor vehicles heavier than 23 tons, or the weight of a BRDM scout car.  The bridge at Reya Gunde Bihar doesn't seem to have that problem except at the verges where tanks tend to bounce as they move across.  About half the time the driver loses control and the tank flips, so when that happens, I have to restart the game.

Opposing the Chernarusian probe is an enemy tank company of 12 T-55/122s and a reinforced motorized rifle  platoon deployed in Bajerke Dumez.  Also, an MI-24 flight is on call, and a T-34 tanks company with a rifle company of dismounts is heading towards the town.

First the river crossing:

Pookie's ships and naval objects

I have to wipe the PC last night and restore from backup in order to regain lost space.  While that worked and I managed to restore most of the Arma 2 OA/Arma 2 installation I can into a problem using  Pookies Naval addon.

A solution had to be found because nearly half of my personal scenarios include seaborne insertions/extractions or resupply.

I found that a file used to make installations between Arma 2 and Arma 2 OA compatible had not been installed.  That file, called extended_eventhandlers.pbo could be found in Wings of Russia - IL-76 addon.  I simply extracted that file and dropped it in the main addon directory.  From that point on, I was able to use Pook's Navy stuff.

Defending Niarchos

It is two hours after the CDF take Niarchos.  It is 2100 hrs.  The BTR damaged in the battle was towed to the south part of the town and set up with a crewman manning the machine gun.  The other two BTR squads are deployed to the western side of the town, and the BRDM-AT platoon was dispersed, one to the wood north of town, one in town on the road leading out of the town and one in the woods south of town.  This was in case the enemy attempts to attack using tanks, which is expected to take place eventually.

The problem the commander faces is a lack of ammunition.  Facing the CDF unit is a rifle company with air support in the form of two MI-8s, moving to a deployment.  American forces have taken an airfield in the south along with the port facilities, so two CDF ammo trucks, escorted by a US Marine Humvee detachment is moving to Niarchos, and is expected to arrive by about 2130.

The American commander is sending a marine rifle squad by air and it is expected to arrive by 2110.  The marine unit will be under the CDF commander, and will remain to assist until about 0000 hrs.

The commander deploys his command element to the woods to the south of town.

The marines have landed at about 2110, right on time.

Enemy infantry start to appear deep in the woods north of town.

About 30 minutes later, there are a lot of dead bad guys out there, no damage or losses to CDF forces, as enemy infantry tries to cross an open area en masse.  Marines have taken a hit with three dead and two wounded.  CDF medics are directed to provide medical assistance.

Manually moving the ammo truck forward (about 300 meters north), the driver moves past one of the two enemy helos shot down.

The battle is over.  CDF forces hold the town, with little losses.  But a strong enemy counterattack is expected near midnight.

Taking Niarchos

Nicosia is now a new front in the Chernarusian narco war.  Operations against Chernarusian narceauxs will include assistance from US forces as well.   But first on the military agenda for Nicosia is to land a force there, and the location selected for the first Chernarus insertion is near the town of Niarchos.

This is a spare operation for the Chernarus military.  The attacking force consists of one BTR rifle platoon and a supporting anti armor group.  The objective is Niarchos, but the real objective are the three fuel trucks that are north of the town.  CDF force commander has ordered the operation to capture those fuel supplies until its logistics can catch up to the forces there.

Guarding Niarchos are two rifle squads and an armor platoon with three BRDM scout cars.

Attack on the Bridge at Reya Gunde Bihar

Two hours after the last battle at the bridge at Reya Gunde Bihar. the enemy decides to call in air support and make a final attempt to take the bridge.

In all, three T-55/122s and six squads of infantry three of them without their BTR battle taxis close in on the location.  Additionally, two SU-15T jet fighters loaded out as ground interdiction fighters are called in to support the attack.

On the Chernarusian side, as before two T-80BVs and one BMP-2 are the only other armor the Chernarusian have other than the three BTR rifle squads.  The time is 2100 hrs.

The "good old days" before the attack begins.

Stalemate: Bridge at Reya Gunde Bihar, Part 2

Two hours later, 2000 hrs, repairs were affected on one of the two disabled tanks and one of the BMPs.  The Chernarusian command group has left the area and the enemy has only lost four BTRs.  The Chernarusian commander still hasn't found the enemy tanks.

This time, the enemy decides to make a stab at taking the bridge.  The actual objective is the far verge of the bridge.  If either side takes that objective, that side controls the bridge.  As soon as the enemy T-55/122s appear, the shooting begins.

The player's command BTR infantry group, about 150 meters south of the southern verge of the bridge.

Bridge at Reya Gunde Bihar

A Cherarusian armor group is tasked with seizing a river crossing.  Size of the opposing force is a BTR motorized rifle company and two T-55/122 tank platoons.

Scenario description is as follows:

The commander is to lead an armored group consisting of three BTR rifle squads, a T-80BV tank platoon and a command group with two BMP-2s, one BTR and a security group of four riflemen, plus a logistics group with spare ammunition fuel, repair and medical trucks.

The time is 1700 hrs, November 25th, 2013.  The approach march begins about five kilometers away.  No air support or additonal forces are available.  Dusk falls at around 1800 hrs.

The commander has the option to take the bridge, or simply keep the bridge under observation.

Chernarusian MOD reveals CNF base in Lingor

CNN -- A spokesman for the Chernarusian Ministry of Defense revealed Saturday that a small military unit currently is based in the tiny island nation of Lingor.

Chernarusian MOD spokesman Captain Olga Medvedev told reporters in a routine press briefing in the capital that the Lingor government has granted basing rights to a small contingent of Chernarusian naval forces, and that Chernarusian Naval Forces (CNF) have already begun operations in the region.

Government sources refused to disclose the size or composition of the forces in the region, only saying they would be used to advance Chernarusian national security.  Capt. Medvedev only said the military base was new and was established in the last two weeks.

Capt. Medvedev also said that the forces are operating under the direct control of the MOD and not Admiral Gorkhov, who controls Chernarus' military's counternarcotics operations in Chernarus.

Much of the marijuana and cocaine sold in Chernarus comes from outside Chernarus, but until today it was unclear where the drugs were being grown.

President Jesus H. Cripez's political allies have been complaining constantly since the establishment of the military mission in Takistan about expanding the military's role in the War on Drugs, and some of the leaders of the president's party complain privately that Chernarusian military forces are being  unnecessarily used in lieu of a police and legal solution.

Chernarusian Ministry of Defense Announcement -- 11-09-13

The Chernarusian Ministry of Defense said today that a small detachment of Chernarusian Naval Infantry are to establish a small base at the anchorage of Solnichi.

The MOD told reporters that the move had nothing to do with the increase of insurgent activity north of Berezino.

The MOD spokesman also said that the death toll on Friday was 6 Chernarusian rebels.  The MOD refused to elaborate.

Addons used in the Chernarusian Narco Wars Project

Currently I currently use Arma2: combined Operations, but I also have a few community addons I use as well.

I do not use the ACE mods because frankly I can't get them to work properly.

The Addons are:

Project CDF
The website says:  Project CDF is a mod that is aimed at extending the content available to the fictional Green Sea Region. It originally started as a small project to expand the Chernarus Defence Forces, but has blossomed into quite a large project which has greatly expanded content on the CDF side as well as the inclusion of a brand new faction: The People's Republic of South Zagoria.

One of the things that compelled me to use this addon was the addition of the BTR-60.

AK74M pack
The website says:  This pack contains 48 configurations with different equipment. This addon requires Arma2 CO in order to work.

If you love Russian weapons, and who doesn't :o), this is an excellent addon.  On writing some scenarios not having weapons with addons such as suppressors, lasers and thermal sights was frustrating when deploying CDF/CNF troops on special operations.  This addon fixes that.

 CheyTac Intervention M200
The website says:  The Intervention M200 is a manually operated, rotating bolt rifle. The retractable buttstock allows for adjustment of the length of pull, and can be fully collapsed for storage and transportation. The barrel can be quickly removed for replacement, or storage and transportation. The butt contains integral real monopod, which is hinged, and can be folded up when not in use. The heavy, fluted barrel is free floated, and its rear part is enclosed by tubular shroud, which serves as a mount for integral folding bipod and carrying handle.

I wanted a long range sniper rifle with night sights and a suppressor, and this weapon fit the bill.  In scenarios it is the main weapon for long range scouts and usually the first special forces on the scene to an operation.  I gained a soft spot in my heart from Call of Duty 6, Modern Warfare 2, and that is another reason why I made this the sniper rifle of choice for Chernarusian special forces.

Ships, Naval Mines, and Naval Objects
The website says:  PBR boats and a "typical" light patrol boat for BLUFOR, OPFOR, and IND factions.

The Chernarusian map has one long coast and it is hard to see why more patrol boats and other minor surface combatants were not available.  This addon fixes that deficit.

 NIM Dynamic Weather
The website says:  The purpose of this addon is to bring a more life like weather system to ArmA2. It also enhances the payers surroundings and makes the user feel more immersed with the natural environment. The user will be able to select a variation of game logics which allow the weather systems to be activated.

It's always sunny in Chernarus, or stormy, never snowing.  This addon fixes that issue, and as I write more scenarios for Takistan, it will be used extensively.

KuiK's Winter Camo Pack
The website says:  Re-textured original BIS Arma 2 basic units (not inc. Civils and Insurgents)  Re-textured original BIS Arma 2 basic tanks and vehicles (not inc. Civils)

Pure eye candy.  The notion that Russian equipped military units do not have winter camo is blasphemy!

Other addons I have used in addition to these, but they include forces such as British SAS and US Navy Seals.  If I post a scenario for download and it includes extra addons, it will so state along with links to the downloads.

Cherarusian Narco Wars: the Basics

Chernarusian Narco Wars project is a private wargaming project intending to use the Arma 2 platform to develop scenarios and campaigns.

I currently use Arma: CO as the plaform, but adding others addons as well.

The basic story is this, as can be seen in my other page on the subject:

In 2011 a new Chernarusian permanent government was elected. The Cherarusian parliament is divided between the majority Conservative party and the Liberal party. Because of the civil war, in 2010 Chedaki political activists insisted and won a total of 10 at large seats out of 100. The 2011 elections gave conservatives 53 seats with Liberals gaining 37 seats. The Liberals also elected a charismatic leader named Jesus H. Cripez, who vowed to heal the wounds of the civil war and political divisions within the country.

In the 2011 elections liberals gains amounted to a total of 45 seats to conservatives 45. That suddenly made the Chedaki group very powerful and important to the Liberals and to Cripez's legislative agenda. One of the top legislative agendas for the Chedaki was autonomy for northern provinces, which they claimed would allow them to recover from the ravages of the civil war.

To that end Cripez proposed to allow some degree of autonomy to the northern provinces by allowing Chedaki dominated areas to collect and used their own revenues to rebuild their areas, to allow them to take over local radio and television stations in the north and to maintain their own security force. The proposal enraged conservatives who claimed that autonomy was the last thing Chernarus needed as it emerged from its civil war.

The result was another low level civil war which drove out many ethnic Chernarusians as well as some Russians from the area and plunged the area into a deep economic depression. The resulting chaos helped the Chedaki with recruitment to their security forces, but it also started some Chedakis to begin illicit drug production as well as distribution both to areas in the south and to Russia. Because of autonomy agreements the Chernarusian government was unable to intervene into the rapid growth of the illegal drug industry.

Conservatives complained daily to Cripez about drug problem developing in the north for weeks until the government finally relented to bring the military to bear onto the problem.

The Chernarusian Navy commandeered and set up a naval aviation squadron at the airstrip in Balota last January and began aerial and surface patrols on the eastern coast. The patrols went unarmed at first with only instructions to observe and report. On February 15th, one two plane patrol was fired on by four Chedaki coastal naval patrol boats just off the coast near Rify. One of the SU-25s sustained light damage, but the Chernarusian navy began to fly armed patrols this time with orders to fire only when fired on. A week later another patrol was fired on and one SU-25 was shot down, the pilot drowned.
Thus began the Chernarusian Narco War Project, as the Chernarusian Naval Forces (CNF) took over most operations on the coasts and in the northern zones.  The Chernarusian Defense forces also deployed a large army contingent near Zhelenogorsk, and is conducting counternarcotics raids in the north.  You can find the Order of Battle here.

You can also find the CNF deployment Order of Battle here.

One of the bases of the project is the notion of limited warfare, where military forces have a quasi civilian function against guerrilla forces, and are constrained from using their full might.

For example, no artillery units or armor units are available to CDF or CNF forces in Chernarus, except under narrow circumstances.  A regiment of 21 BRDM armor cars are available as armored fire support, and to provide units for road patrols.  If the Chedakis or the NAPAs managed to get armor vehicles, the light infantry must deal with those units with available forces, subject to approval from the admiral.  I have a few scenarios whereby NAPA forces have used tanks and armored infantry to try to attack from the south, in which SU-25s had been authorized to deploy against those forces.

Another example is in air support.  Chernarusian forces are not allowed to use air power, except for transport purposes, or with approval from the theater commander.  When combat aircraft are used they are normally CNF aircraft loaded out with naval weapons such as torpedoes and deployed on naval missions including maritime patrols.  Those aircrcaft can be loaded out with the usual stores such as bombs if the mission calls for it.

What the net effect is expected to be and has been so far is a series of more challenging scenarios and campaigns which do test the player's mettle in Arma 2.
